Supplemental Sacramento Commuter Bus Added to Increase Capacity
May 15, 2008 In response to existing capacity constraints and in preparation for the upcoming Interstate 5 re-construction project, Yuba-Sutter Transit will begin operating a supplemental afternoon Sacramento commuter bus on Monday, May 19th. A supplemental bus is a second bus that operates just before an existing schedule on those days when additional capacity is expected to be needed. While only one supplemental bus will initially be provided, other supplemental buses are expected when the I-5 project gets underway on June 2nd. The supplemental bus is designed to provide capacity relief for three early afternoon schedules that are all now operating either over, at or near their seated capacity on a daily basis - the 1st and 2nd afternoon Highway 99 schedules and the 1st afternoon Highway 70 schedule. The supplemental bus will be operated Monday through Thursday (subject to the availability of both buses and personnel) and slightly ahead of the regular 2nd afternoon Highway 99 schedule. From the stop at J & 4th Streets, the supplemental bus will continue along the usual route until it is full at which time it will immediately depart downtown for service to East Nicolaus; the Bogue Road Park & Ride; the Walton Terminal; and, the Yuba County Government Center. This supplemental service may be operated with either a small local Dial-A-Ride bus or a regular commuter bus depending on availability. The supplemental bus may be full as early as the first stop so do not let the regular bus pass as the supplemental bus may have filled early, already gone by or simply is not running that day. Supplemental service will not operate on Fridays or during holiday periods. Yuba-Sutter Transit's Sacramento ridership has grown much faster than anticipated since new schedules were last added in September 2007 and new buses necessary to add more permanent schedules are not likely to be available before the end of 2009. Average weekday (Monday - Thursday) ridership in April was up 30 percent over April 2007 and May ridership to date is up by over 30 percent over May 2007.
